Homeschooling Online - The Seton Home Study School

Catholic homeschooling is predicated upon the belief that parents are the first educators. Pope John Paul II, in his Letter to Families, wrote:

Parents are the first and the most important educators of their own children, and they also possess a fundamental competence in this area; they are educators because they are parents.

In 1975, Dr. Anne Carroll founded the Seton Junior and Senior High School in Manassas, Virginia. Intended to be a parent-operated school, it met with instant success. As more Catholic parents began to hear of Seton they started to send their children to Virginia to attend the school. But being separated from their children for long periods of time was a burden for many families. Parents started asking for materials to teach their children by correspondence.

Carroll decided to develop home school curricula for parents in 1980 and the Setond Home Study School was founded. The school took off and continued to grow. In 1985, the school got a new overseer, Dr. Mary Kay Clark. As director, Clark watched the school grow even more and moved it to a new location to meet the demands of parents seeking to home educate their children. Seton has grown so much that is now the largest publisher of of Catholic academic textbooks in the United States. The school offer Catholic curricula for children kindergarten through 12th grades and even offers online courses.
